Firewall checkbox greyed out

I just changed my cable modem connection from USB to Ethernet. On USB
I had the firewall set, although I did uncheck it at the request of my
ISP's technical support while trying to resolve a problem (probably
irrelevant).

But now, on the Ethernet connection, the firewall checkbox is greyed
out and inactive. It may or may not be relevant that under the
previous setup this Ethernet connection had been used for a peer to
peer network connection to another PC (for Internet sharing mainly).

I still have a dial-up connection available (though not used) and on
that the firewall checkbox is active.

How can I get the firewall working on the Ethernet connection?

TIA

The wizard doesn't run because I don't presently have a network.
Manual setting runs up against the deactivated checkbox in my original
post. The Settings button is also deactivated and greyed out.

Can you run it as though you are setting up an Internet Connection?

I replied to you last night Michael but it hasn't appeared for me so
I'll repost it.

I'll try Michael. But for the moment I've gone back to using the USB
connection (which is allowing me to use the firewall as before).

I'll need to use the Ethernet though as I'm setting up a wireless
router to replace my peer to peer network.
