Filename field display changes depending on whether file extensions are displaying in Windows

Here's a tricky issue. In Word 97, with Windows 98, the way the
filename field displays depends on whether the file extensions in
Windows Explorer were displayed or hidden at the time the current Word
session began. If the file extensions were displayed when the current
Word session started, then the filename field will be in the form
"name.doc". If the file extensions were hidden when the current Word
session started, the file name field will show as "name", without the
".doc".

But isn't this odd? After all, whether the extension is displayed or
not does not affect the actual name of the document, it only effects
what is shown in a Windows folder. So why does this happen?

In any case, this leads to an annoying inconistency in the way the
filename displays. I want it consistently to be "name", not "name.doc",
but this changes purely on the basis of what the file extension display
property was when Word was started. Is there any way I can get around
that so that the filename field will always show as "name", not
"name.doc."

Note that the problem is the same whether the filename field is inserted
using the autotext entry filename or using the Field dialog box.

G'day "Larry" <[email protected]>,

You have answered your own question nicely :)

You have changed a system wide WINDOWS setting that effects file name
formatting in any standard system WINDOW of which file > open is one
:)

There is no way to tell Word to not be part of Windows.
