file record segment **-** is unreadable

I just reloaded winxp pro on my girlfriends machine (dell)
changing the file system from fat32 to ntfs because she
was having some real problems with loading speed. The
machine was crawling. Anyways, yesterday after the
machine had been on for a while, it apparently rebooted
because when I came in, it was on a screen that said
something like hit f1 to load, hit f2 to do something
else, but everytime I hit f1, it came back to that
screen. I just powered it down. Now it comes up, but
errors are appearing all over. It works for a while (I am
typing on it now) and then bam! Sometimes it won't let
her copy things, saying the drive may be full, sometimes
it says that iexplore. has a problem. Sometimes it just
freezes up. It won't download anything from the internet
and errors out when I try, but I took norton av from my
computer and loaded and ran it. I ran chkdsk and it said
that one of my disks needed to be checked for
consistency. When it did that, the error "file record
segment 14672 is unreadable. It repeated that for 73-75,
17808-15, 832-39, 64-71, and 19152-55. When it finished
that section (1of 5), it ran the next
section, "correcting a small error in 17810" and then
started over again, coming up with the same errors, only
this time only (1 of 3) then it boots to winxp. I
searched this site for the "file record segment" error
and did not find anything. What the heck has happened to
this machine? Please help.

Whoa. Paragraphs are a Good Thing. Sounds like you've got a bad hard
drive. BTW, changing to NTFS from FAT32, while not a bad idea, won't do
anything for your speed.
