Favorites, links now end in .url

(Internet Explorer 6.0.28)
Suddenly, all the addresses in my Favorites list and on my Link toolbar have
the extension .url appended to them. On the Links bar, that means I cannot
have as many links visible. At first, the icon next to the links also
changed to the generic windows icon, but after I deleted all the links, then
visited each site and dragged and dropped the address on to the Links bar,
they once again appeared withe the IE icon -- but still with .url.

I also have Opera 7.11 installed on the computer, and in Opera's
preferences, I checked the box for URL Shortcuts to make Opera the default
application. The only thing that happened was that the icons on the links
bar and in Favorites became the Opera icon.

What's happening...and is it a problem, other than each link taking up more
space on the Links bar?

Known as "favicon"
When you clear the Temporary Internet Files
the favicon is cleared. If your TIF size is
small (1-5mb) then over time the favicon will
be kicked out in favor of new one.

Find these FREE programs:
FAVORG or FAVICONIZER
These will save the icons in a different
folder and fixes your favorites
with the favicon icons.

Orrie,
It appears you have used a registry tweak to unhide the normally
hidden ".url" extension. Change it back if you don't want to see it.

I'm not aware that of changing anything. I don't know anything about
registry tweaks. Is it possible to unwittingly do something that would
cause this? Is there a chance that other more serious changes have
occured in the registry without my knowing about it, and is there
anything I should watch out for?

And finally, how can change IE6 back to simply display the names of
Favorites and Links?

In Win7 Ultimate x64, I had this problem and researched it extensively. I found that, despite all of the "NeverShowExt" registry entries being in place, the .URL was still visible in my IE Favorites.

I then found the solution: at the top of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is an entry which is simply an asterisk (*) and under that was a string named: AlwaysShowExt. After I deleted this, my Favorites no longer showed the .URL extension. I hope this helps...
