Favorites Button does not work

L

Larry

Running IE 6.0.2800, recently installed update Q824145 in
XP. One user opens IE and the Favorites button does not
function, and the menu drop down shows only "ADD to..."
and "Organize..." but the Favorites folder still has
folders and links in it. Another user logs on and
everything works fine. Can someone offer any assistance??
(Her's is messed up, mine works fine!!!) Thanks, Larry

I'm having the same problem: Favorites menu only lists "Add.." and
"Organize...", neither of which work anymore. And the Favorites button
only brings up a blank list. The Favorites folder in Documents and
Settings is fine. The problem does not occur with other Accounts. The
Registry entries for Favorites appear to be fine.

I first noticed it after removing some Adware. How do I get my
Favorites to show up again?

Hi crescntbch :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

How to delete a corrupt Favorites folder and create new one

Before doing so, you should create a new folder on your desktop called
FavBackup, and copy all your favorites into that folder as a backup.

Then do the following:

Create a new Favorites folder as per the instructions here.
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers3.htm#favorites

(Note: There are other items here that might also apply)

If the problem persists after doing this, then you know that there is
nothing wrong with the folder, and there may still be some form of scumware
on your system which may require further action. If not, then you can copy
the links from the backup folder on the desktop, just the ones you want and
only a few at a time, to be sure that none of them are corrupted or bad,
testing as you go to make sure all is working properly, until you have all
the ones you want restored to the new folder. You can then delete the
backup folder on the desktop.

If you can not delete the folder from the Windows Explorer, then you will
need to manually delete the Favorites folder from the Safe Mode:

How to delete files or folders in Safe Mode

A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP
This article discusses the several Safe Boot options that Windows supports.
These options load a minimal set of drivers. You can use these options to
start Windows so that you can modify the registry or load or remove drivers.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, or you need help with the above,
please post back to this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the recommendation.

Examination of the Registry revealed the problem:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft
\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

has an entry for Favorites. The Data value was set correctly, but the
Type was set to REG_SZ. I created a new Favorites entry with the Type
as REG_EXPAND_SZ. This repaired the problem.

I don't know if the Adware itself or the MIcrosoft AntiSpyware
(beta-test) scrubber caused the problem.

Neither one has ever done that to me.
