fast grayscale scanner on a budget

I want recommendations for a scanner that will be used for scanning
scientific articles copies (8.5 X 11 " size, or A4 paper) into
electronic form. I currently scan at 300dpi in grayscale, and adjust
settings in photoshop before converting to pdf, but my current scanner
is too slow (40 secs for a page).

So, any recs for a fast scanner on a budget (under $100) ? I don't care
for color accuracy or software, just speed, cost and acceptable
grayscale at low res.

try Epson.com or HP.com or microtek.com or minolta.com and read the scan
time spec's.

Cannon scanners are good.
