Extra rows at bottom of spreadsheet

Why are there empty extra rows (or records) at the bottom
of Excel files that seem to go on into eternity?

I use customer supplied excel files as database imports
for addresses for bulk mailings for them and there are
always extra rows that create empty records when imported
into the mailing software. I've tried opening them in
Excel but cannot find a way to delete these empty rows.
They just stay there and if you scroll down you get more
rows on into eternity. Since I'm really not an Excel
user I don't understand this.

Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

Excel has 65,536 rows. You cannot add more nor reduce that number.

If empty rows are showing up in your database imports then someone has not
properly defined the range of data to import.

You could, in Excel, hide the extra rows below your data then select "visible
cells only" when setting your source range.

I suspect that your customer has given you a file in which
the active range is much larger than the actual data. A
visual clue that this is the case is the vertical scroll
bar is really small (the piece you grab to move up and
down). To remedy this do the following.

Open the file in excel and locate the last row of actual
data. Select all the rows below that (down to 65536) and
hit delete. Then save and reopen the file.

You should see a change in the scrollbar size. Give your
mail program a try.
