External Firewire Drive Playing Up

Hello All

I wonder if someone could help me with this problem.

After well over a year of running faultlessly, my external
firewire hard drive has taken it upon itself to disconnect
at various intervals. I have not changed anything on my
system - Windows XP home, 40Gb external firewire hard
drive, and have not been able to find a solution at
Microsoft knowledge base.

This drive is used for my data back-up and I am now
nervous about using it.

Any help would be appreciated.

NB: sometimes (this may not be it, but check it) a FW

device appears to be plugged in all the way, when it is a
little bit short of all the way in.
