Extend System disk?

C

Carlton Whitmore

I posted earlier that I had two disks, I found out today
that there are two partitions on one disk.
I have a 4GB partition that's my system partition and it's
running out of space. I'd like to add the other 14GB on
the same disk to that partition. From what I've read you
can't extend a system partition? If so, is there another
way I can add this disk space without having to format?

Dave,
I tested Diskpart on a test server, while it worked it
can't tell you how big the unallocated space is so I
tested another product called PartitionExpert 2003 from
Acronis. With this product I'm able to easily create boot
disks and do a bunch more than just resize the partition.
I'll report back as to how well it worked on the
production server.

Here is what I did to extend my existing system disk
partition:
1.) Used Dell PowerEdge tool FAST to extend the hardware
level partition
2.) Installed PartitionExpert 2003 and had it create the
boot diskettes
3.) Restarted server and booted with PartitionExpert
diskettes
4.) Ran PartitionExpert 2003 and extended partition
The whole thing took about 30 minutes including the reboot.
This was the best $45 for a server tool I've ever spent.

This problem can be solved

sorry for replying an old topic, it seems that many people have the same problem, just want to share my experience and help other.
As the post was added long ago, the methods are old, too. In fact, you need not to do so complex works, just shrink other partition and expand the os partition with the unallocated space, you can operate on the disk map visually, even expand the partition without reboot.
If anyone has this problem, see this article, it is helpful http://www.partition-tool.com/easeu...tend-ntfs-system-partition-without-reboot.htm

There are many tools availiable,
Free tool Gparted, diskpart, easeus partition
Commercial, disk director, partition maigc (stop selling) paragon partition.

I like to use easeus partition, free and easy to use, with standard GUI, but it is free for home user
