Excel problem, File disappeared.

I created a file in Excel on a WinXP PC that I called
pron.xls and saved it in the my documents folder, I then
decided to move it and using Windows Commander F6 key
(Rename and Move) I attempted to move it to a different
folder and rename it to prn.xls at the same time.
This process caused the file to disappear!!
I now realise that this was because prn.xls is an invalid
name.
I tried to search for the original and new names but
neither existed. There is no sign of it in the recycle bin
either.
Is there anyway of retreiving the lost data?

As far as I'm aware no. If you can't find the file when doing a file search
and it's not in the recycle bin then it's pretty much gone. Of course if
the file has been deleted AND little/nothing has been written to the drive
since the deletion an undelete utility could help.

I do not see anything invalid about the name prn.xls!
Why not do a search for p*.xls scanning all local drives, and or network
drives?
Another search string might simply be *.xls then sort the files by date
(presumably you have some idea when the file was last saved) and look over
the results of the search.
Any chance the file is in the recycle bin?

Actually prn.xls IS an invalid filename. A simple test.
Copy an existing file and try to rename it to prn.xls and
see what happens. An error message saying "Cannot Rename
Copy of Workbook.xls" A file with the name you specified
already exists. Specify a different filename. Doesn't
matter what file I use, or what folder it's in. The same
message every time. So obviously this is a windows preset
filename that you cannot use.
