Excel Bar that looks like an Outlook Bar

I have an employee who has what looks like an Outlook BAR
on the left side of his Excel worksheet. He inherited the
computer and files and does not know how to get rid of
it. I have never seen anything like this. Anyone know?

Maybe there's an outline on the sheet.
Choose Data> Group and Outline > Clear Outline to remove it.

Oooh. I get it.

And another thing that looks like Data|Group|outline is Data|subtotal.

I think I found what he was looking at. It is
File/OPEN. It is the BAR that is located vertically on
the Left side of File/Open. IT contains History, My
Documents, Favorites, Desktop, My Network Places. What he
would like to do is remove that BAR from the File/Open
screen Or, at least, be able to ADD or Remove the
shortcuts within it. Is there a way?

In xl2002, you can add a shortcut to that File|SaveAs dialog.

Do File|SaveAs inside excel.
Go to your favorite folder
Tools|Add to My Places

Then you could just click on that icon right after excel "helps" out by going to
the addin folder.

If you're using xl2k: You could use an addin from MS:

It's called Places.exe that allows you to update the places list.

Scroll about halfway down.

I use xl2002. I could right click on an icon and choose to remove it (well, for
some of them!).

In Excel 2000, I don't know of any way to change the bar.
In Excel 2002, you can add folders, or delete some of the folders.
--Choose File>Open
--In the file list in the main part of the dialog box, select a folder
--At the top right of the dialog box, choose Tools>Add to "My Places"
To delete a folder from the bar, right-click on it, and choose Remove
(Remove is not available for the default folders, such as History

Thanks for posting that link! The Places add-in makes it a little easier
to open files in Office 2000.

I liked the option in xl2002 (at home). And I missed it at work (xl2k). I
installed Places.exe and it makes navigation a little easier.
