Everything on screen is now symbols instead of text

Here's a new one for me. Here's a screen shot of my wife's computer.

Everything in Windows is now complete gibberish. How did this happen and how
do I fix it? Even just replacing a corrupted file is going to be insane
since I can't read anything to find the correct files / folders.

I've seen this though forgot what caused it. You might try feeling your way
to system restore (reference with another computer :) or reboot and enable
the start menu by pressing F8 and select "Last Known Good Configuration."

Ditto Jon's reply, I was getting this on such a regular basis that I ended up
putting a shortcut to System Restore on my Desktop because finding it in the
Accessories folder proved to be such a nightmare. I had tried Last Known
Good.. that didn't work for me. If you can't find System Restore, boot into
Safe Mode with Command Prompt ( or find the Command prompt Icon in
accessories, a black square icon with C:\ in it) and type:

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

and press enter to start System Restore.
At the time I had this problem I did find 2 folders (might have been files)
somewhere with apparently random names like, kdgtrnf.exe or similar with no
indication of their purpose. After backing things up, I deleted them and
rebooted. Everything has been fine since.

Colin.
