every time I open WM, I get a new Recovered Messages folder and sub folders that are empty

Think of WLM as WM + bug fixes + Hotmail access.
Other differences are largely cosmetic.
There are a few basic differences. WLM works on both XP and Vista.
WLM doesn't have a unified Inbox, it sets up separate mail folders
for each mail account.

WLM is receiving the benefit of ongoing Microsoft development
while WM is not. Unlike here, Microsoft reps participate in WLM's
newsgroup.

There is no drawback to trying WLM. If you decide you don't like
it, you merely uninstall it, and WM is back.

Many thanks for this advice, it's very helpful.

One question: If I change to WLM, what happens to the email folders and
emails that I'm keeping in WM? Do all these automatically migrate to the
proper place in WLM?

Theoretically, but not satisfactorily in my experience.

In most cases the migration is automatic. There is no harm in trying
it out. If you don't like WLM, merely uninstall it, and WM is back.
