Event ID 1004

Sorry if this is a double post, mine has not shown up after 10 minutes...

Getting lots of error 1004 (can't issue a client license) on my w2k TS
server. I have licences available, and have found this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=827355. It says contact support for the
hotfix, but it's £80 for email support and £200 for phone! If this fixes the
problem do I get the money back?

Also the KB article refers to SP3 - I have SP4 - should they problem have
been fixed in that service pack?

Hopeing an MVP can clarify!

Thanks

Mike

Depending on how and where you post a message (through Google, or
directly on the Microsoft newsserver), it can take a while for it
to show up.

I assume that you have thin clients? And the TS does not log other
Events? Meaning it can locate the TS Licensing Server? Do you also
have other clients? Can they connect without problems?

The hotfix you reference has as prerequisite that your run SP3 *or
later*. The hotfix itself is a "preSP5" hotfix, which means that
it was released after SP4. So the problem also exists in SP4.

Since the mainstream support for W2K has ended, hotfixes are not
free anymore.

Thanks Vera

Yes, we have a few thin clients, and they all work 80% of the time. What
tends to happen is that someone will go to connect, and the logon screen on
the client will just timeout. When we look in event viewer we have the 1004
error, but license manager will report available licenses. After resetting
sessions, restarting the license server etc, it will issue the licence.

Will there be a 5th SP for 2k server, or is nothing happening now its out of
support?

Thanks

Mike

There will not be a W2K SP5, only security updates.

Are you running the latest firmware on the thin clients?
Check if your vendor has an update.

Thanks again Vera. The clients have the latest firmware, so this MS fix is
the only chance. Last question - will they still issue me the hotfix, even if
I have to pay?

Cheers

I'm not sure. Check:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=fh;en-us;lifecycle

As far as I know, W2K is now in the Extended support phase,
meaning that non-security related hotfix support requires a
separate Extended Hotfix Support contract to be purchased. Per-fix
fees also apply.
