Error Msg: Windows could not update the computers boot configurati

While doing an update from Windows XP pro to Vista RC2 the following error
message appeared during the "expanding files" step.

"Windows could not update the computers boot configuration. Installation
cannot proceed."

There is only one O.S. on this PC with two internal and one external hard
drives. The boot drive is a SATA300 drive connected to a Promise SATA
controller. The second drive is a SATA150 connected to the motherboard.

Any suggestions for getting past this showstopper?

Did you tell Vista during the install to install the SATA drivers for the
Promise card?

Sounds like Vista doesn't know what it is.

I don't see any on the Promise site in clear view, but it may be worth
looking into.

The process never got to the installation phase. It never asked for SATA
drivers. Also, the Windows upgrade Advisor had no issues with the existing
Promise SATA drivers.

John,

Do you have drive space to do an install from DVD? Or at least start the
install to see if it sees the disk? It definitely sounds like Vista is
having issues seeing the boot disk.

Bill,

Are you saying to copy the DVD onto the C:\ drive and run the upgrade from
there?

B

Bill Frisbee

No, I'm saying boot from the DVD and do the install from there if possible.
Don't do an upgrade.

See if Vista can see that disk.

You don't have to even really start the install, just see if the Vista
installer sees that disk or partition in question.

Now I understand what you are suggesting. I'll try that tomorrow.

Thanks for your help.
