Error message in System Configuration Utility

Hello all and thank you for your generous assistance.

I have just recently been getting an error message when I go into the
startup list in my system configuration utility.

The message is: "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to
change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to
make the specified changes." In addition to the error message, even if I make
no changes, when I click "ok" to exit the "restart" options pop up.

This error pops up when I check or uncheck an item and when I click "ok" to
exit but not when I "X" out of the utility.

On August 15 I downloaded nearly two months worth of Windows Updates but am
not exactly sure of when this error began to occur.

One other query is that, and I have brain freeze on this, but somebody
recently unchecked all of my startups in this utility but I am SO SURE, that
this error started last week but it does lead to a minor question:

What vital apps are recommended to have begin when Windows start up?

I have the MSN McAfee and the Security Center starts up with nothing checked
but there are so many other McAfee apps listed in startup I don't know which
one is important and which is just fluff.

Thanks for any and all insight. I hope one of some of you are familiar with
this error message.

Once again, thank you.

One additional note: I saw the exact error on another sites board. There was
a reply: "Hi, this can occur if you have not designated an admin password
during install."

I had no problem operating without a password for more than a year and a
half and this error did not come up until just recently.

The rec was to add a password and then remove it later.

I tried adding the password and there was no resolution.

Once again, thank you,
Craig

Craig,

Do you have Zone Alarm installed?

Hello Ramesh, thank you for your concern.

No, I do not have Zone Alarm installed. I read a small bit about that after
I did a search on my issue.

I'm starting to get the impression that this is somehow related to the new
McAfee update to version 11.

The person whose message is next to the last on the page has the very same
problem and also recently upgraded their McAfee.

I still haven't figured it out how to resolve the issue other than to
simply, or not so simply, remove McAfee. But I don't really want to do that
anyway.
