Hello,

Per guidance I have followed in the Knowledgebase, I have
Win XP fully patched. Am trying to use a USB 2.0 device
(Flash Card Reader) on a Dell 8250. I get the following
error mesg: a HI-SPEED usb device and will function at
reduced speed when plugged into a non-hi-speed port.

How can I fix this?

Perhaps you only have a 1.0 USB port and not a 2.0 port. Think about it -
it's not *that* hard

Hi;

A few specs would really come handy but here goes...

How old is the system?

Is your system fully and really USB v.2.0 compliant? and not the 1.1 make
believe commercial jargon "mumbo-jumbo".

Are the correct USB 2.0 (if...) drivers installed for your USB serial bus
CONTROLER(s): they OFTEN needs be "re"-searched and "re"-found by XP to be
fully activated.

There's an upgrade to the latest v. at the Ms Update site.
It won't hurt to "get and save" it for later use.

(Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Universal
Serial Bus Controler)

"Force" the detection if a messsage such as "drivers are present ... but
not...etc" by clicking on the tab to have XP go thru the whole procedure
again.
If the drivers "catch", a new device will be declared as found (with all the
usual visuals).
It will be listed in the USB section as: Standard Enhanced PCI..." and
you'll be humming along.

Thank you, but according to Dell all the ports are USB
2.0. I checked that first. Any constructive ideas?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I am running Win XP Home Edition
SP1, fully patched, on a Dell 8250. Dell has no clue,
but assures me that the ports are 2.0.

I have looked for new hardware, added and removed drivers
etc, with no luck. Appreciate the constructive ideas!
Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi;
How many USB ports overall?
Did you try all of them?
Re: Got one MB here with a total of 6
4 are real 2.0, 2 are only 1.1.
Could the DELL rep. err on this one?
Try all the ports.

ReHI;
Just anxious/curious to know if the "Standard >Enhanced< PCI to USB Host
Adapter" line appears or not in the "Universal Serial Bus Controler" section
of: start/settings/control panel/system/hardware/device manager"?
The line NEEDS be there for "USB v.2.0" to be considered activated and to
function.
