Error 126 when trying to start "Windows Time Service" on WIndows XP Pro

S

stormonts

We have 130 Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 computers that are configured
to use a local Linux computer as their time server.

Suddenly, we have 2 computers that are unable to start the "Windows
Time Service". If you try and start the service, those computers
display the error: "Could not start the Windows Time Service on
SS-TESTER2. Error 126: The specified module could not be found"

If you look in Event Viewer, this is displayed:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 4/3/2006
Time: 12:29:08 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SS-TESTER2
Description:
The Windows Time service terminated with the following error:
The specified module could not be found.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The computers that are having the problem were working fine in the
past. Rebooting the PCs doesn't help. Any ideas what we can do to fix
this?

Hi Steve

Open C:\Windows\System32 folder and check if the file w32time.dll is
present. If it's missing, then copy from C:\Windows\system32\DLLCache
folder, or expand a fresh copy from the Windows XP CD-ROM (or from the
ServicePackFiles\i386 folder in the hard disk, whichever has the recent
version of the file).

How to expand Windows XP files from the installation disk:

Yes, the file is present and is the same version as the copy that is on
PCs on which the time service is working.

The problem has now spread to at least 20 computers.

Type this in Start, Run:

REG EXPORT "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time"
C:\W32.TXT

Then open C:\w32.txt file with Notepad. Paste the entire contents in your
reply.

The registry export looks OK, when compared with my system. I'm not sure why
the error message is caused though the file w32time.dll is present in the
System32 folder. Running out of ideas now, but shall post back if I find the
solution.
