Error 0x8050800c should be a thing of the past

M

Mike Treit [Msft]

With the engine update released today (engine version 1.1.1303.0) we have
fixed the most common causes of the error 0x8050800c that many users were
experiencing.

If you are running engine version 1.1.1303.0 (you can tell by going to the
"About Windows Defender" dialog under the help menu) and you still see the
error 0x8050800c when performing a scan, please let me know so we can
investigate further.

There are a few cases where this error may still happen, but they should be
quite rare.

Thanks

Thanks...

I managed to rid my x64 of this with an upgrade install, having identified an unrelated process that could not load a registry hive due to it being missing for some unknown reason. I am now essentially error free (this probably just jinxed it :/ ).

Can you describe the exact scenario where you see the error? That will help
narrow down the cause.

Thanks

I still get this error too. I am using 1.1.1303.0 engine version and I have
tried chkdsk. I never got this error when I first downloaded the program but
I subsequently performed a defrag and have had the error ever since. Could
this have anything to do with it?

Hi Mike,

Unfortunately, like these other guys I too still get this annoying error
when trying to remove nasties that WD has found and am also runing the most
up to date engine version (1.1.1303.0). When you hit OK it takes you back to
the report page and shows you the 'Quick Scan' button (tried selecting that
but comes up with nothing found). Report page also gives you ability to
select 'Remove' (from previous scan) and selecting this puts it into a loop
and continues to try and remove threat with no effect.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated

The issue that we fixed previously happened while a scan was in progress. If
you are hitting this while trying to _remove_ a threat after the scan has
finished, then it's a different issue.

Can you send me any event log messages from Windows Defender that are
created when you see this error?

Thanks

This is a different problem then the one we fixed.

What errors from Windows Defender are in the event log?

Thanks

Are you sure you were seeing error 0x8050800c? The error in the event log is
0x80508026, which is a different error code.

In any event, this is a known issue with how archive files are handled. We
are planning some changes to improve the experience when a malicious file
inside an archive (i.e., inside something like a ZIP file) is detected, so
that it can be removed without getting this error.

In the meantime, look at the list of resources that Windows Defender reports
as containing the malicious file. You should be able to remove it manually
by simply deleting it, if it's not inside an archive file that contains
other things you want to keep.

I'm surprised that you've removed all antivirus software? Windows Defender
isn't a substitute for an up to date antivirus program. (Just an
observation--not meaning to sidetrack the thread.)

Ah, thanks Bill. You are absolutely correct, Defender by itself is not
sufficient for complete protection.
Your observation highlights something I overlooked in my travel-induced
sleepy state yesterday...I'm running Defender along with Windows Live OneCare
Beta for A/V and Firewall - what I *should* have said is that I removed all
other A/V programs.
