Epson Stylus 740i black ink light

Hi,

I'm trying to replace black ink on my Epson Stylus 740i printer but am
running into problems.

I took following steps:

1. I opened the cover
2. pressed the clean button, the head moved to the cartridge
replacement position
3. I replaced the black cartridge and closed the clamp
4. pressed the clean button again but the head didn't move!!
5. I waited as per instructions in the manual and didn't turn off the
power
6. After 5 minutes when nothing moved, I turned off the power and the
head moved to its previous position (all the way to the right).
7. I turned the power back on, I heard sounds of head moving but the
black ink light stayed on.

I'm using genuine epson cartridge. What could be wrong with the
printer? Has anyone encountered this problem before?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Sam

YOU ARE USING A PRINTER THAT DOES HAVE A GREATER PROPENSITY TO CLOG. I
WOULD BUY A CANON IP5200 AND USE ONLY CANON INK. I DO NOT THINK YOU
WILL HAVE A PROBLEM THERE.

Can deduce that it was working OK prior to changing the tank, is th
tank ok?
Any chance of trying another to prove the point, or try it in anothe
printer

Any switches or sensors disturbed whilst fitting the replacement i
another possibility

Hi Davy,

The printer was working fine until today. The ink light should have
blinked if it was runnling low also I should have gotten faded output.
I didn't see any of those, just a solid ink light today.

You are using a brain the size of an Epson printer nozzle.

Are you aware there are two different procedures to follow for changing
these tanks?

If an ink light is flashing (indicating low) or lit continuously
(indicating empty) then: With the printer on, open the cover, press the
cleaning button (far left one with the ink drops icon) for 3 seconds
till the cartridges move to the left.

If the ink light is not yet flashing or lit but you want to change a bad
or outdated cartridge then the process is the same except press the
middle button (paper icon) for 3 seconds instead of the cleaning button.

Yes, I tried both options and in any case, after replacing the
cartridge, when I press the cleaning / paper button the head doesn't
move back to its original position!

Looks like the printer is not detecting the cartridge and my older
cartridge is not empty.

Thanks.

The 740 has a leaf type spring in the rear of the ink cartridge area of
the head carriage that has to contact the far side (from the front of
the printer) of the cartridge to break and re-establish a contact to
tell the printer a new cartridge was installed. Sometimes, either the
cartridge doesn't sit correctly to actuate the spring (it looks like a
flat piece of spring metal peaked in the center) or over time, the peak
flattens out and the cartridge can't contact it enough to move it
properly relative to the hidden circuitboard under that spring.

If you remove th cartridge and take a small screwdriver or other device
that can slip under that peak, and gently pull it outward to bend that
middle peak and make it more acute, so it sticks out a bit further and
the cartridge will then contact it, that usually does it.

The main problem is the printer is not detecting the new cartridge being
installed, so its indicating no cartridge. Try what I suggested with
the spring plate and see if that works. Another fix, although it tends
to further progress the already developing problem, is to slip a piece
of mattboard or thin cardboard behind the cartridge or in the front to
force the cartridge to push further back onto the spring clip/leaf spring.
