Epson does not support Vista

Anyone contemplating Vista who has Epson hardware should check out their
site. Epson is not planning drivers for many products that are even 1-2
years old, abandoning more scanner users than printer users.
"If your product is not listed here, it is not supported by Windows Vista"
means Epson is not bothering to write a driver.

Epson is definitely not a charity. They definitely are not making
lots of money selling scanners. So assuming they would provide some
kind of backward compatibility even 1 model year back is a real
stretch.

You have a couple of options:
1. Do not purchase Vista. There are excellent alternatives including
Apple's and Linux. There's a good Epson scanner driver in Linux and
great color tools.
"Security" in Vista remains in a pitiful state. Color managment is
still pathetic in Vista. Microsoft's DRM will bite you in the butt.

2. Do not upgrade. There's no compelling reason to upgrade. None.
You don't get anything different or better for desktop publishing.

3. Buy a third-party scanner driver. Epson's software is absolutely
nothing compared to Silverfast's or the other scanning software people
use in this group.

It would surprise me if any of the scanner manufacturers backported
their software for Vista.

Look at this as an opportunity to try new things.

Sounds like Apple converting to OSX. Orphaned a lot of devices. I'd
stay with XP if you can, still Microsft but a mature interface, at
least runs solidly for me on 5 machines. I understand that if you are
buying new, you may not have that option.
Remember though if you have had your Epson for 2 years the model might
be 5 years old. A shame but that is the way it is. I lost my home
scanner converting my computer to XP.

Yeah, I feel the same thing. I'd been visiting their 'Vista
compatibility' page since December 2006. They said "Vista will be
available for MOST Epson products once Windows Vista is available at
retail stores." And voila. You say this is 'MOST'? Yes, my Epson
Perfection 610 scanner is old but, porting 32bit XP source code to
32bit Vista is really that hard? After all aren't they the same NT
based Windows? Currently the only way I can choose is multi-os
enviroment with Windows 98.

By the way, VMWare didn't work. I couldn't make the guest OS recognize
the epson scanner.

Get VMWare and run Windows XP in a virtual machine under Vista.

Quick question. Is it possible to use Epson 610 scanner under Linux?
If it is, I would like to install Linux as a second OS.
