Ending task with task manager

Ending a hung task with task manger makes my desktop
disappear. I have to reboot to be able to regain my
desktop. Any ideas what can fix this without rebooting.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Open your Task Manager if not still open.
Ctrl + Shift + Esc | File | New Task (Run...) | Type:
explorer.exe | OK
