encoding won't stay on western european(windows)

gif's load as white box with red x. having to click on
view and change from western european (iso) back to
western european (windows) every time I load a page. This
started happening after upgrade on IE6.0 Tried
reinstalling IE6.0 w/ and w/o upgrade. Tried resetting
all defaults. Checked regedit. any ideas welcome.

Try a repair or IE.
Add/Remove programs/MS/IE repair.

If still no joy then find out if you are missing some .nls files and that
the registry settings are correct according to this article.
