enabling XP's firewall, error = The dependency service or group failed to start"

I followed the steps on the windows update site to turn
on the built in xp fire wall. However once I click
the "Protect my computer and network by limiting access
to this computer from the Internet" box I get the
following message:

"an error occured while Internet Connection Sharing was
being enabled
The dependency service or group failed to start"

I've tried serveral times with the same results (yea I
know the definition of insanity is doing the same thing
over and over expecting different results - what can I
say, I'm blond!) Anyone have any ideas as to fix this
problem?

Thanks for trying.

Followed your instructions to the T. Still not working,
I get the same error message which is "an error occured
while Internet Connection Sharing was being enabled
The dependency service or group failed to start" Looked
all over the Microsoft pages for info on this as well as
the HP site. If it helps at all, I am using a HP
pavilion and cable to connect to the internet.
