Your reference to a remedy of 7/10/2007 is not helpful since several
hundred messages get posted here every day. So, I don't know
what you may have tried already.

As a start, make sure you are not running a non-compatible antivirus.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download and install
a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their email
scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

Gary. Thanks for your interest. I have done the following
1Uninstalled Norton
2 installed avast
3 Turned of both inbound and out bound scanning
3 as suggested in a previous post reset the advanced optins in internet
explorer.
4 Removed and recreated my email account

Howver the net outcome is that i still cannot attach files to outbound email
when sent using windows mail.

Any further ideas to cure this would be much appreciated.

Are you running any other third party security software such as
anti-spyware?

If that is not the case, it sounds like some critical Windows Mail
files are corrupted. There are some complicated procedures for
resetting those, but an easier solution is to simply upgrade to
Windows Live Mail:

Gary Tried as you said. Downloaded windows live mail beta but it exhibits
almost exactly the same behavior. Attempts to attch to mail elioits a message
"this programme has stopped working"
Also puzzled by the fact that live mail shows identities and email addresses
that were deleted some months ago. Information was sent by the programme to ,
i presume Microsoft.
Am at a loss as to what to do next.
Thanks

As far as the contacts, if you signed in to Windows Live Mail (WLM)
with a 'Live ID' (Hotmail address), it will synchronize your Hotmail
contacts with WLM contacts. If you then delete contacts from WLM,
they will also be deleted from Hotmail.

Sorry to hear that WLM did not solve the problem you are having
with attachments. The only remaining solutions I can think of are:

Try a non-Microsoft email program, Mozilla Thunderbird:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

Or. do a repair-install of Vista:
