E-mails keep sending hundreds of times

Occasionally, an e-mail with an MPEG or other attachment
continues to send over and over again, hundreds of times,
every 2 minutes or so. This will be in the outbox, but
never gets to the sent folder. Even when I delete it from
the outbox, it will sometimes start up sending again
later, this time showing up in neither the outbox nor
sent folders. As you can imagine, this is a crisis! Is
there some kind of signal that tells either outlook or
the isp that the message was sent successfully and tells
it to stop. Could that signal be messed up? Thanks. Rich

It is probably your AV if you have it set to check your incoming and
outgoing mail. Try turning it off.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After searching google.groups.com and finding no answer, Rich Selph asked:
