DVD no longer works after Win2000 install

OK, I added a new hard disk because the old one died, and
instead of reinstalling the WinME software that came with
the machine (because the restore discs from Compaq were
faulty, as their tech support and many boards told me), I
installed Win2000 Professional and love it. However, now
my DVD player does not work- the error message
says, "There is no Windows 2000 compatible DVD decoder
installed on this system. You may be able to fix this
problem by visiting the computer manufacturer or
www.hardware-update.com."

However, hardware-update.com is a joke...and when I tried
to download various fixes from Compaq, the system kept
rebooting itself during installation.

Suggestions? Even ideas of somewhere to start looking
would be great. Thanks.

The DVD decoder that windows refers to is a third party
application that has nothing to do with the OS or Compaq.
It is obvious that this software was previously installed
on your ME system.
WinDVD or PowerDVD are two such packages, you should have
no problem finding a download sight for either (using any
search engine), I believe that some versions may even be
free.
