DVD Drive help most needed

I bought a new HP desktop computer and from day one have been having the same
issue. i put a cd in my drive and it reads it, says what it is, turns on
autorun, all the magic that should in theory happen. now if i put in a dvd
into the same drive absolutely nothing happens, no autorun, nothing. if i go
to computer and click on the disk drive, it says insert a disk into drive E,
so i take it out, put it back in, close it, and nothing. ive gone thru the KB
twice now looking for something to help and tried everything that was close
(and some that were just Kinda close) and nothing has helped. Ive also added
my Xbox 360 HD DVD drive to the computer (something i did often with my
laptop) and it installs right, downloads what it needs to, and comes up with
the same exact problem of no disk in drive. ive tried updating drivers for
both drives and nothing has cleared it up.

OS : Windows Vista Home Premium
Drives : Internal : HL-DT CD/DVD-RW (Light Scribe burning drive that came
with the computer)
External: Xbox 360 HD DVD USB

I have had the same exact problem with my new HP. I have contacted HP and
was given instructions that just made my drive disappear. There may be a
problem with the latest compatibility update from microsoft. I noticed that
it was the last update that i had downloaded before everything stopped
working. The update number is KB932246. you could try to uninstall it but no
guarantees. If it doesnt work it will reinstall on your next windows update.
More info on that update :
