Dual Boot on 2 Hard Drives

R

Richard Frazier

I have two hard drives C and D.
I have Me on D and XP on C.
Since ME only wanted to load on C, I disconnected the C
drive and installed ME on D.
At startup, the system sees ME and XP but will not load
ME. If I click on either I get XP. How do I fix the
problem.

The easiest solution, from my vantage point, is to start
over. ME must be installed first. When finished, ME is
on C:\. Then proceed with the installation of XP.
Choose D:\ drive for installation of XP. XP will take
care of setting up correct dual boot configuration. When
all is done, you will be presented with a menu at bootup
so that you can choose which OS you want to load. Works
like a charm when done correctly.

Before you reload the OSes, it might be worth a try
to manually edit the boot.ini files, found just under the
file system root (i.e. C:\boot.ini and D:\boot.ini). Frankly,
I don't know how they should be configured when only
one OS is WinXP, but if you know the basic syntax of the
boot.ini file, you should be able to figure it out. See the
posting on Nov 17th by me entitled "Multi-boot Windows
XP without special software" for a enough boot.ini syntax
to get you going. Start out with editing just the WinXP
boot.ini and make the disk that holds it the first in the
BIOS boot sequence (i.e. boot priority list).
