Double clicking on .ppt files does not launch the presentation, only a blank ppt

When trying to activate a ppt from windows explorer by
dble clicking the file powerpoint launches, but as a blank
presentation. To open the required ppt I then have to
go "file", "open", and navigate to the required ppt file
through the task bar in the program

I would first check the files association for .PPT. Open Windows Explorer,
go to Tools > Folder Options > File Types and locate .PPT and select it.
Click on the Advanced button. Is "Open" highlighted, indicating that it is
the default?
