Don't know user name or password...

I have forgotten the password and user name to log into
windows. I can not get on the computer. I have tryed
everything. Is there a default user name/password that I
can use to get into windows to change the settings? If
not, does anyone have any other ideas as to what I can
do? Your help is greatly apreciated.
Thanks,
Katie Rutledge

Search this newsgroup for the keyword "password", the question is asked
continuously in here. The default password to get into Windows is the
password used to install the operating system (the admin account) which was
defined by whoever installed the OS. There is no excuse for this condition
to prevail since it's generally recommended that additional accounts be
created in order to prevent situations like this.

There is no default per se. If you set up your own account, you had to be
logged on as administrator to do so. Best practices recommend renaming the
administrator account, to remove this as a default, but if the administrator
account was not renamed, then it still exists. But there is no default
administrator password, in that Microsoft does not configure this in the OS.
I have no idea if some system vendors use preset defaults, although I
sincerely hope that they know better. If you are not the administrator,
contact whoever set up this system.

There are also various tools on the web that will allow a user to overwrite
or reset the administrator password, at the risk of corrupting the registry.
But the recommended action, if you have the CDs and their product keys, is
to reinstall the OS. See "Windows 2000 Logon Passwords" at
<<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;258289>>.
