Domain name at logon differs from the name of the domain

I have a problem with the Windows 200 Server domain name/dns configuration

In active directory, the domain name for the domain controller is ok (colli-tech.com). Under My Network Places, I cannont see the domain. Instead the domain that is listed is actually the netbios name of the domain (colli-tech). Active directory displays "colli-tech" as the pre Windows2000 domain name, which I believe is actually the problem. With ntdsutil connecting to the domain server "colli-tech" produces the same server name as does connecting to "colli-tech.com". Another problem, which I see as a result of the first, is that the logon prompt does not display the domain name "colli-tech.com", but "colli-tech".
I've tried applying the methods for dis-jointed domains as well as the changing the security restrictions for "self" which allow the domain to validate write the service principal name and the DNS host name, with no results. I've resinstalled Active Directory 5 times with the same results! Does anyone have a suggestion/solution?

NetBIOS name is different from DNS name. During logon you will always see
NetBIOS domain name, as this is part of SAM logon name. You should use UPN
logon in form of username@dnsdomain name in username field if you want to
use dns names. My Network Places also uses NetBIOS so in browsing it
displays NetBIOS name.

Hello Matjaz,

Thanks for replying to my cry!!
logging on to the domain is also part of the problem. From
my workstations I can see the domain name in "logon to",
but attempting to logon to it brings the error "no domain
controller is available to process the request". All
workstations only see the actual domain name "colli-
tech.com". I cannot access any resources from the domain.
When I boot the server/controller in safe mode "Active
directory restore", the computer's domain is listed
as "unknown". In this mode I cannot access the active
directory domains and trust object. When I try I get the
message "the configuration information describing this
enteprise is unavailable..." Using ntdsutil.exe to try to
recreate the domain results in an error when I try to
connect to it: "sBindW error 0x6d9(There are no more
endpoints available from the endpoint mapper.)" Microsoft
says that means the dns-server is using old data.
Reinstalling the DNS server as they suggest didn't help.
Do you have any idea why and what I could do to recreate
the domain?

Thanks in advance!

How many network cards are in the domain controller?
If there are more than one and they are not teamed disable all so that
there is only 1 active nic on the machine.

In the tcp/ip properties for the nic that is active, it should be pointing
to itself for DNS.

In DNS manager right click on the zone, and look at "Allow Dynamic Updates"
Make sure it is set to Yes

can you run dcdiag /v and netdiag /v on your DC and post back your results.
