It's possible there was a bad shut-down of Word which left some of the
temporary files of Normal still open, and that is intefering with the
saving of the open documents.
The first thing to remember is, if Word freezes or if there is an
"illegal action" message, immediately to open the Shut Program dialog
box (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), and shut any instances of Word. This will
generally (I think) remove any temp files and you can now proceed to
open Word again without problems.
But you may also want to search your hard drive for any temp files
(*.tmp) and delete them.
