DNS Internet Name Resolution

J

Justin Graham

Hello,

I have a Windows 2000 server that is running DNS.

I have placed forwarders with the DNS servers from my ISP.

If I give a client computer the ISP DNS servers it can get
online. If I give a client computer the server DNS address
it can't get online.

I need this to work becuase I'm using Cisco routers at
three sites to link them together via a VPN. The same
thing happens at the other sites.

I am new to DNS setup and any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin Graham

Hi Justin,

Can the server get out to the internet? Can you do a nslookup, then set
type=all, then yahoo.com? Can you resolve this with the forwaders in the
server? If you remove them can you do the same commands, just using root
hints? If not check these things
1. Server pointing to itself for DNS (this is on the Nic properties)
2. No "." zone under forward lookup zones
3. If multiple Nic, Open DNS MMC, right click the server, make sure you have
the internal Nic listed only.
4. Is netlogon running? At a command prompt run net stop netlogon, then net
start netlogon.
5. run netdiag /fix, have to have the support tools installed.
6. Do you have SP4 installed? Do you have a single Label domain? Right click
My Computer, then properties, then click the Network Idenification tab. Is
the FCN: like this servername.xyz. Domain: xyz
7. Do you have disjoined name space? Same as #6 but would look like this
FCN: servername.xyz. Domain: xyz.local
8. Try booting up with Director Service restore mode and get out to the
internet? Does this work?
Hope this helps.
