Display As field in Outlook 2003

When we upgraded from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2003, we noticed a new field in
Contacts -- the Display As field. The problem is that field is populated
with the Contacts' email address instead of their name. Is there a way to
quickly change this so that as we rollout to the rest of our firm it would be
populated with the name and not the email address? Thanks.

The field has always been there, it was just a hidden field in earlier
versions. The format for that field cannot be configured by the end user.
Each version of Outlook has formatted it differently. All you can do is
reset the field individually for each Contact.

Outlookcode.com might have some vba code that can run through them and
change it...

I wondered about that too. If you can change the File As... field, it ought
to be possible to change the Email Display As field.

Here's how you bootstrap this annoying Outlook feature:

▪ When you import your address book using a .csv vile, the column called “E-mail Display As” will default as an email address. You can change this by exporting the Outlook address book and manually changing that column in the .csv file. File > Import & Export > Export to a file > Next > Comma Separated Values (Windows) > name the file > Next > Map Custom Fields. Here is sample code [=IF(A3="","",A3)&IF(B3="",""," "&B3)&IF(C3="",""," "&C3) where A is First Name, B is Middle Name, C is Last Name] to concatenate and put spaces between where needed. Inspect names in your .csv spreadsheet using Excel to ensure that they all concatenated properly.

▪ After you have created the column of display names, label the top cell E-mail Display Name. The way you map that to the E-mail Display As column is: File > Import & Export > Import from another program or file > Next > Comma separated values (Windows) > Next > Next > map to Contacts folder > Next > Map Custom Fields > on the right side, scroll down and expand the Email section by clicking on the + > on the left side, click on the email display name column that you have created and drag it over next to the E-mail Display Name column, which is renamed to E-mail Display As in Outlook Contacts. Should work.
