Disk Cleanup hangs on: Scanning: Compress old files.... forever!!??

Hello,
Thanks in advance to all those who help me out. Yesterday
this problem started where I go to run disk clean-up on
my C: drive and it sits there forever on Scanning:
Compress Old Files? I can hear my hard drive working but
I just left it on to see and an hour and a 1/2 later, it
is still in the same spot!? After I cancel it, my PC is
like a snail, well as slow as one. I have to reboot to
get it back to its original fast/normal state. Any ideas
on what to do? I do have SP1 installed.
