Disk Cleanup Extremely Slow - maybe Hanging

If I click My Compter | C: Drive | Properties | Disk Cleanup, the computer
tells me it's "Scanning - Compress Old Files". It will then sit for
extremely long periods to the point that I usually decide I didn't really
want to do a cleanup, and cancel. Why is this happening?
