Disappearance of 2 HP CD writers from My Computer

K

Ken Ackles

Two days ago I noticed that the disk drive was running
continuously for no apparent reason. The computer started
to hang and then I discovered that both HP cd writers
were unavailable and had in fact disappeared from the My
Computer folder. Restarting the computer did not solve
this but turning the computer off for a few minutes and
then restarting did return everything to normal. Now the
same thing has happened again. What is wrong?

sounds like low and high filters in the registry. I got this from Marfer's
XP notes at www.geocities.com/marfer_mvp/xp_notes.htm He also has links to
Kelly at Kelly's Korner and Doug Knox.

Here it is:

start ... run...regedit... click on
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\
4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318. highlight cd rom key (s), delete the
values "upperFilters" and/or "LowerFilters" remove the entry for the cd
device and restart. it works. don't ask me why.

Just a guess here - it could possibly be too much heat. Turning it off for a
few minutes will cool it and return correct function. Make sure all your
fans are working and if you don't have one or two dedicated case fans, try
adding one.
