Difference between "Reapply Slide Layout" and just clicking on the layout?

What is the defined difference between merely clicking on a slide
layout and clicking "Reapply Slide Layout"? About all I can see is the
"Reapply Slide Layout" reapplies all the fonts from the Slide Master,
and clicking the layout thumbnail just applies the placeholder sizes
and locations (I guess), but doesn't reapply formatting to any text
that may have had its formatting changed from the placeholder
specification in the Slide Master.

Is that close?

Where is the actual operation of both those techniques defined?
Especially the click-only technique - I can't seem to find anything
describing that anyplace.

This is far, far from a serious problem - it's just that inquiring
minds would like to know. Thanks!

I think this is what I'm seeing: If I click on the layout thumbnail, it
just associates that layout with that particular slide. If it was
already in that layout, nothing happens (which is nice, in case I've
shoved stuff around and maybe changed some formatting). If I click
Reapply Layout, it not only applie sthat particular layout to the
slide, but if I've changed the location, size, formatting etc. it
resets it to the way it's defined in the Master. It also resets bullet
numbering, styles etc. to their originals.

I could swear, though, that I've seen it change stuff when I've just
clicked the thumbnail and wasn't changing the layout. Maybe not.
