DHCP Server invalid IP address, No DHCP

I can't seem to get the Xp DHCP client to accept an ip
address from the DHCP server on a new laptop. All other
systems run normally, and with a mannually configured
connection settings all is well. Diagnostics show
DHCPserver address as 255.255.255.255 (invalid). Why it
would think the server address should be that I have no
idea. Anyone know a quick solution to this?

Joe,

255.255.255.255 is the broadcast address TCP/IP uses to discover DHCP
servers. It sounds like the desktop system can't get to the laptop, perhaps
caused by the firewall on the laptop being turned on.

Are you using ICS to share the Internet connection? How are your computers
connected? Can you ping both computers?

As the other responder says about 255.255.255.255

What values do you get when you do ipconfig /all from the command prompt?
Can you copy all of them and post back here please.
How's the laptop connecting to the rest of the network?
