DHCP failure caused by RPC service failure

Ed

Hi, all, and a request for help. My apologies for the
lengthy post.

I have a PC running Win2000 Server (AMD Athlon 1GHz with
512MB RAM). As a practice machine for MCSE study, I had
installed DHCP, DNS, RRAS and an Active Directory domain
controller on it. My intention was to have the PC serve as
a DHCP server, DNS AD-authorized server, and AD primary
DC. I had set up my DHCP and DNS correctly, with the IP
addresses, subnet mask and gateway info for my test domain
and PDC manually set, and everything was working.

About three days ago I had downloaded and installed the
latest Windows Security patch KB824146 on my machine.
After rebooting my PC, my PC exhibits the following:
- my DHCP console indicates "Cannot find the DHCP Server"
- my AD Users and Groups, and AD Sites and Services
consoles all indicate "The Server is not operational"
- In Services, the BINL service will not start, and
shows "Error 1722 the RPC server is unavailable"

I'm wondering whether anyone else has experienced the same
problem and fixed it without resorting to uninstalling the
DHCP, DNS and AD modules of Win2000 Server. I suspect that
the Windows patch had changed Registry settings to impact
these features.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance, and Best Regards,
Ed

Have you tried uninstalling the patch?
Also, what SP level?
Is your domain a single label name?

Hi, Ace,

My PC has Win 2000 SP4 installed.
I did uninstall the KB824146 patch immediately afterwards,
and have not reinstalled it since.
I had set up a domain called 'testdomain', and my PC was
designated pdc.testdomain.com.

Hope this helps, and Best Regards,
Ed

Ed,

I guess we'll need a little more info. The RPC errors, kind of hints to me
that you may have your ISP's DNS servers in your IP properties. Not sure,
but would like to start there. Let's atart off with this: can you provide an
unedited ipconfig /all for us?
Thanks
