device settings cannot be displayed

I have a Windows 2000 client desktop in a Server 2003/AD environment
having issues with printers, particularly on an HP LaserJet 4250 but
others as well (KyoMita).

This is a relatively new problem on this machine and other Win2000
machines are not experiencing the same problem. When attempting to
select printer properties or to change settings on the printer, the
following message pops up:

"Device settings cannot be displayed. the driver for the specified
printer is not installed. Only spooler properties will be displayed.
Do you want to install the driver now?"

This is a networked printer. The print server is a 2003 server. Can
someone assist me with how to correct this issue?

Thank you.

Hello patrick,

So the workstation is 2000 and the print server 2003, that's the problem.
If you do not have installed also the 2000 driver for the printer to the
print server the client can not use it. Or has you installed the 2000 printer
driver to the workstation?

Thanks for the reply. We figured that was the problem. We ended up
just formatting the system and installing XP. This "fixed" the problem.

Hello patrick,

Thats one way, but ofcourse you could add the driver for 2000 to the print
server. Then the 2000 machine can use it if you add the printer to the 2000
machine. Under the sharing tab of the printer properties you have the option
to use the "Additional Drivers" button. Here you can add them.
