Desktop to notebook via ethernet crossover

P

PDB

This should be simplest thing but ...

I am trying to network my notebook to my dektop (to share
resources, files, net connection etc.). Both are running
WinXP HE. I am using an ethernet crossover cable, without
a hub, natch.

I ran the Network Setup Wizard on both specifying that
the desktop would be connecting to the internet and that
the notebook would be connecting via the desktop. They
have the same Workgroup.

The hardware all seems fine. if I disconnect the cable or
power off a PC, I get a message saying they are
disconnected. If I power on or reconnect, I get a message
saying they are connected @ 100MBs.

On the notebook everything seems fine - there are files
in 'My Network Places' although only local files.

So far so good...

BUT...
- On my desktop PC, there is nothing in 'My Network
Places'.
- I can not ping the other PC successfully.
- If I try to explore below the Microsoft Windows
Networking level on the desktop, I can see the Workgroup
but selecting that gives me the message "'WorkgroupName'
is not available. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. ...." I am logged in as the
administrator.
- The notebook can not see the desktop or vice versa.
- The notebook (therefore) can not use the net
connection etc.

Now I know that I'm going to kick myself but I've spent 2
days on this and I'm starting to really lose it.

And to think my next intended step to to lose the
crossover and go wireless. Aaarrgghh!!!

PLEASE HELP!

Can you type "ipconfig /all" from the command prompt on each machine and
paste the results back here?

Hi there

OK, your desktop PC has an IP address of 192.168.0.2, whereas your notebook
has tried to use DHCP to configure its IP addres but failed and used an
auto-configured IP address of 169.254.170.174. Since these addresses aren't
on the same subnet, there's no way the machines can communicate.

If you change the IP address of your notebook's LAN card to 192.168.0.3, for
example, it will be on the same subnet as the desktop and you should be able
to establish a link.

If you're using Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop, you will need to
configure your notebook's default gateway to be 192.168.0.2. The subnet
mask should be 255.255.255.0 on both machines.

ICS should contain a DHCP server to enable these settings to be
automatically given to the laptop. Something's obviously awry there, but if
you have no need for DHCP while using your laptop in other places then just
plugging the numbers in directly (a.k.a. hardcoding) is fine for a small
home network.

Hope this helps

Oli

Thanks for your help so far. I really appreciate it.

I changed the IP address on the Notebook and it's default
gateway as you suggested.

Some progress but not enough:
- the desktop CAN now ping the notebook but NOT vice
versa.
- the notebook CAN see the desktop in the workgroup but
NOT vice versa.

In addition most of the original problems remain:

- On my desktop PC, there is nothing in 'My Network
Places'.
- If I try to explore below the Microsoft Windows
Networking level on the desktop, I can see the Workgroup
but selecting that gives me the message "'WorkgroupName'
is not available. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. ...." I am logged in as the
administrator.
- The notebook still can not use the desktop's net
connection etc.

My suspicion is that it involves the desktop as the first
few problems. (If so this sucks as it is brand new.)

Hope you can help.
