Dell Inspiron - problem with Roxio

Chris

A friend has a Dell Inspiron (running Vista Basic), which came
pre-installed with all sorts of rubbish, most of which I have managed to
remove.

A remaining problem is repeated messages from Roxio software, saying
that it needs to be configured - and asking for the installation media -
and then when you put the CD in it says that the required software isn't
there.

The messages start coming up every time Weather Watcher is launched ...
which is really weird!

Is this a known problem?
Is it anything to do with Vista?
Does he need the Roxio stuff?
Or is it best got rid of?
If so what would be a good replacement?
Would uninstall and re-install help?
Any suggestions appreciated.

Personal opinion but I have always had all sorts of problems with Roxio.
I booted it off my Inspiron and replaced it with Nero. No regrets.
nero is by far the superior product. If you do even a minimum amount of
burning you want Nero.

Thanks. What about DVD playing?
It looks as if Roxio does that.
Would Windows Media Player do it?

I've always liked Nero as well over Roxio, But I have to admit I
haven't had to use either one YET with Vista. WMP11 works perfectly so
far. I just got done ripping over 40 CD's continuously, burned some
home videos to DVD, watched a few retail DVD's and have sync'ed my
Creative Zen all without a single problem.

The one major flaw with WMP 11(my system(s)) is veiwing large digital
pictures, it appears to split the RGB values and change the aspect
ratio. But I've used ACDsee so long to view, organize and catalog my
photos I can't live without it, so it really is a non-issue for me.

Hi Chris,
I had the same problem with a Dell-Dimension that came with all kinds of
rubbish pre-installed. One of them was also Roxio.
I have finally formatted and completely re-installed my machine with Vista
only, and I have afterwards installed all the programs of MY choice (not
Dell's).
Nero 7 is one of them and it works like a charm.
I also installed the VLC media player and made it my default because I don't
like WMP11 and all that DRM stuff. VLC works very nicely as a player.

Yes, I too dumped roxio EMC 9. It corrupted my ability to play mpg's in WMP
11. Once i gave it the boot all was well again. I too use nero and boy, why
did I wait so long to change.

I wondered about the clean install route.
Do you reckon it's less trouble than uninstalling the rubbish?
Any problems?
It would remove the Dell reset to as-bought state.
Were the drivers supplied by Dell OK?
