Deleting from IMAP mail folder

Outlook 2003 on XP

When I delete messages from "Local Folders" they are immediately moved to
"Deleted Items" - This behaviour is good.

When I delete messages from folders on an IMAP server they are marked for
deletion but remain in the folder until I "Purge Deleted Messages" and then
they are deleted entirely - This behaviour I don't like.

How can I make my IMAP folders behave like my Local Folders?

I have used Netscape 6 on a different machine to address the same folders
and it behaves the way I want. ie Moves deleted messages to "Deleted Items"

That's just the way Outlook works. Those of us who use IMAP accounts find it
most annoying.
