Delay during editing

Why is there a major delay when it comes to editing a Word 2000 document on a network? It would work fine on a local drive but not a network drive.

Because while you're editing Word is reading and writing continually to a
temp file, normally located in the same folder as the original file. And is
thus subject to the speed of the network.
