Default view for new email message has changed.

Ron

I am using Outlook 2000 SR1 in Win98. Recently I have
noticed that when I start a new message from the Outbox
the default view has changed from "normal view" to "web
view". It is a minor irritation compared with other
problems listed on this site. But I would greatly
appreciate advice on fixing this mutation. Thank you, Ron

You don't really mean the Outbox, do you? The message shouldn't appear in
the Outbox until you've pressed the Send button. Anyway, to get back to
your question -- it's apparent you're using Word as your e-mail editor.
You'll need to modify the Email.dot template in Word and have it set to the
Normal Layout when you start it, rather than the Web Layout. That should
fix your problem.

To Jocelyn Fiorello: Thank you for your reply. You are
correct; the problem is in Word. Unfortunately I have not
yet figured out how to make the modification of
Email.dot. Using "Find" I have located Email.dot in
Office file 1033, but I am not sure what to do next. When
I look at its "Properties" the only info I find is under
the "custom" tab: Email = yes; Use default = yes; version
= 9.0.2330; LCID = 1033. Can I modify these or do I need
to go to deeper level? Obviously I am a novice, but I am
pretty good at following instructions carefully. Can you
assit me? Thanks so much for your time, Ron

You need to open the Email.dot file in Word (make sure you open the template
itself, not a new document based on the template), make your changes to the
template, and then save it. I don't know if just changing the layout view
will be enough to make the changes stick when saving -- if not, you may have
to set the new layout view, type one character in the body of the document,
save, then delete the one character and save again.

Jocelyn Fiorello, Thanks again. After multiple tries I
realized that to open the template required a "right
click"& "open" versus a double click (which only
opened "Doc 1"). So I made the change to "normal view"
which then carried to "Doc 1". (This did not seem to
require typing any characters but I did this as well.)
However, when (even after rebooting) I open a "new
message" from Outlook I continue to get the "Web layout
view". I do not know if it would help your analysis to
share that the actual title at the top of the screen
is "Untitled Message HTML Microsoft Word". I am beginning
to wonder if the "Web layout view" is the only default
option and that I have been in error in assuming that I
previously had the "Normal view" as the default. At any
rate I have yet to succeed and I look forward to further
advice if you have the time. Thanks so much for your
help. Sincerely, Ron

From what you describe, it seems like it should have worked. You may want
to ask in a Word newsgroup, to get the exact steps you need to take to get a
template to always open in a certain view. Perhaps I'm leaving out a step
in the process.

Jocelyn Fiorello, Thanks again for your time & energy. I
posted a query in the Word section but have yet to receive
a reply. Many many thanks for being out there. Sincerely,
Ron
