Data validation won't take. I enter it, hit ok. It ignores me.

The sheet is not protected. Name shows up in defined names list and
selecting it in the upper left pulldown takes me to the right area. The name
isn't the problem. The cells just refuse to take the data validation no
matter what I try. The strangest part is that everything used to work just
fine other than the in-cell pulldown font being like size 4. Wouldn't mind
some advice on that either.

And now with no change made the validation works BUT the dropdown button is
still missing and, yes, the option is checked to have the in-cell dropdown.

i'm not sure if i understand the original post, but i might be having the
same problem (if i understand the original post correctly). i use
"validation" in certain cells to create a pop-up or drop-down user selectable
list. say values A, B, etc. thru G. The value selected is used by other
cells to set certain parameters and perform a set of calculations. the
equation used in the dependant cells is keyed off the user selected entry
from the drop down list in the parent cell that i'm having problems with.

my problem is that suddenly, the drop-down list show no available options.
when placing the cursor in the cell, the "elevator bar" (up and down
triangles) appears. but clicking on the elevator bar show no selectable
options. non of the letters A, B, ... G show up.

the "in-cell drop-down" is checked in the Data Validation window. i can
toggle it off and on. it isn't helping.

i've used this for about 6 years and many worksheets. last week was the 1st
time i've ever seen this problems. i threw out the file assuming that it got
corrupted somehow and regenerated it. it worked fine for a couple days. not
today, the new worksheet is doing the same thing... argh!

i've tried a few interesting things. i can copy the cell that doesn't work
into a new blank worksheet in a new file. and it works fine! i can create a
new blank file and create from scratch, the drop-down cell in that blank
file. it works fine in the empty file. but when i copy and paste it into my
old file. it doesn't work!

is there some kind of setting for a file that prevents drop down from
working? anyone have any experience fixing this problem?

i've checked for updates for excel to see if there is a bug patch, none are
available... i have excel 11.3.

thanks for any help anyone can offer...
