cross posting

Barry

I have posted a couple of messages (to different groups) lately, and my post has
been cross-posted to other groups. Checking this out, I found that in both cases
I had responded to a cross-posted message. I would be pleased if someone could
advise me on the best way to ensure this does'nt happen. Someone has said to
check newsreader settings, but I don't really know what was meant.
Thanking You,

Cross posting is when you post or reply to a comma separated list of
newsgroups with a single post when you are not certain which group it
applies to. That is so if anyone answers it in any newsgroup, you can
also find that answer in any other group it was cross posted to.

However, you should only crosspost if you have to, you should instead try
to determine the proper newsgroup.

If you reply to a crosspost, your answer should appear in the list of
groups, however, some of us may not have all the groups in a cross post.
Sometimes people crosspost and ask for Followup-To a specific newsgroup I
do not have (I tend to ignore those).

NOTE: Posting the same message individually to multiple newsgroups is
considered rude, because multiple people may waste time providing the same
answer in different groups, not knowing that somebody already answered it
in another group. Also if someone answers it in one group, you will not
know it unless you check that particular group.

Cross posting ties the question and answers together in all of the listed
groups.

Thankyou David. This has clarified the cross posting issue for me. It seems that
when replying to a post I will have to check the group its going to instead of
just assuming my message is only destined for the intended group.ie.be more
careful.
Regards,
Barry
