Crashes when adding effect to video clip

I've impored a movie and I'm trying to eddit it. Everything works fine until
I try to add a video effect then the program just closes without warning.
I've never had this problem before, but I had to reformat my computer and had
to redownload Windows SP2. I'm pretty sure I have MM2. I don't understand
whats making it crash. I've tried using another video clip and it still does
the same thing. It won't allow me to add effects. I'm not sure if filters or
codec can cause problems like this, and if it is, I'm not sure what to do or
which filters or codec to remove. I know FFDshow Decoding can cause some
problems, but when I disable that I lose my picture. Can anyone help me
please...
